Q: How is perfume made?
A. It takes a combination of expertise and imagination to develop a new fragrance. Perfumers can choose from more than 1,000 ingredients to create unique fragrance combinations made from aromatic chemicals and natural oils. Our own Mary Kay experts worked closely a prestigious fragrance house to create the new Bella Belara™ Eau de Parfum. The exuberant floral fruity eau de parfum captivates immediately. The senses are first treated to a delectable medley of apricot and red nectarine. At its heart, dew-covered rose petals and Moroccan jasmine unfold, while a delightful mix of creamy blond woods and cool moss linger.

Q: Why does the scent of a fragrance change throughout the day?
A. Different ingredients come into play at various stages of the fragrance’s life on the skin. Perfumers distinguish between the various stages in three ways:

The top note is the initial impact of the fragrance. These notes “introduce” the fragrance and can last up to 15 minutes. |

The middle note, or heart of the fragrance, unfolds and develops a few minutes after the perfume is applied to the skin. They appear after the top notes disappear and can last throughout the whole fragrance experience. |

The bottom note is the final impression and also the most lasting. It can last several hours after the fragrance is applied. |

Q: Why is fragrance applied to pulse points such as the neck and wrist?
A. In the past, women were taught to apply fragrance sparingly because of the expense, so they applied it lightly on the most feminine and delicate parts of the body. Also, the skin is actually warmer on the “pulse points,” which helps the fragrance evolve and provide a better sensory experience for the wearer. Today, fragrance has become an essential part of men’s and women’s wardrobes. Fragrances are sprayed freely all over the body.

Q: What is the difference between perfume, eau de parfum, eau de toilette and cologne?
A. The difference lies in the concentration of the actual fragrance oils. Perfume has the highest concentration of fragrance oil, followed by eau de parfum, eau de toilette and cologne.

Q: Why do some fragrances seem to last longer than others on different people?
A: Some fragrances naturally tend to last longer than others, depending on the type of ingredients used to create the unique scent. More importantly, we are all unique, and with unique skin types and body chemistries, so fragrance wears differently on each individual.
